The Rwandan leadership has been applauded by the United States government for Rwanda’s efforts towards achieving a truly independent press and freedom of expression in Rwanda, the US ambassador to Rwanda, Michael Arietti, has said,-New Times reported Sunday.
According to the US envoy and a host of media practitioners, unlike the past regimes, the post-genocide Rwandan leadership has registered a positive record towards press freedom.
This was said during a closing ceremony of a five-day workshop on Media Management at Hotel Novotel on Friday, October 20 in Rwanda. Several speakers said the local media had grown day by day under Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s leadership.
“There is a vibrant media freedom taking root now. It may not be 100 per cent but, largely, the leadership of President Paul Kagame has taken a positive step,” said the ambassador. The US ambassador underscored in his presentation, the crucial role of independent media in Africa as an important tool in the democratisation process. The workshop was organised by the US Embassy in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.
